Arnya Tehira is a sound and vision artist. Based in Melbourne, her practices focus on the audiovisual relationship and surround sound’s evocative possibilities. Her study background includes design, audio engineering, then multimedia and finally Media Arts at RMIT. Arnya’s pursuits are generally rebellious to tradition; media and modalities of use tend to be, in a way, unique. Some examples of this are the series of regular sound art performance nights she organised, and performed at – “Oven-Garde” in 2002 at the Builders Arms Hotel which was art at the pub, with not so elitist an approach. Crossing the media terrains and working with video as well, she reversed the norm by creating video to go with her sound thus fore-fronting the sound component. Preferred style of composition is an aleatory (chance) approach, keeping with the “no rules” ethic. The ‘concept’ is predominantly less aesthetic and more direct, which the audience have been known to find unusual or provocative. Exhibitions include: 360 degrees – 1 minute quadraphonic work [West space - 2003], Liquid Spaces – Inhalocean [Bus - 2002], Field – group exhibition of field recordings in a multi-speaker installation [Bus 2002]. Arnya co-curated the “360 degrees – women in sound” project which was a part of the Liquid Architecture 4 program. She was also extensively involved in the RMIT based tRansMIT sound art collective between 2001 & 2003.
